Knowledge check 4/5
A topic that has always interested
in me is diabetes and particularly how to manage it. I decided to listen to the
podcast that discussed OT’s role in diabetes management and became very
enlightened on how OT approaches this chronic condition. I have a connection to
diabetes as my Dad has endured the struggle of Type 1 for over half of his
life. Although this podcast focuses on type 2, the symptoms and daily hurtles
are much the same. Genetics, age, and certain backgrounds are predisposed
factors that are uncontrollable, however their are many controllable factors
that lead to diabetes such as sedentary lifestyle and diet choices. This is the
area that OT focuses on managing. This podcast brought to light for me the fact
that our health care system focuses on health crises rather than prevention.
This type of application does not work well for those with chronic illnesses
such as diabetes.
Our focus on prevention and
management is the reason why OT is proven to be the only health profession that
can prevent readmission for people with chronic issues. The emphasis is put on educating
clients, modifying routines, and adapting self management care. Rather than
making a client fearful of their diagnoses, OT’s will teach them coping skills.
Time management will be discussed to make sure client is taking insulin
properly or eating a snack when it is necessary. OT’s may help put together a
healthy food routine. We may not give advice about which foods are correct for
a clients diet, but focus on things like bringing small snacks to eat during
the day so there is not a need to over consume when it is lunch time. I think
one of the most important things mentioned in this podcast was the fact that
OT’s will always look for what motivates a client and incorporate that into an
intervention. If a client does not enjoy exercising necessarily but enjoys
taking care of their pets, Ot’s may suggest adding in time to walk the dog each
day into their routine. The key to living with a chronic illness such as
diabetes boils down to learning management skills which, in return leads to
prevention of other health related conditions. The role of the OT is crucial in
helping these clients find the balance in their lives again.
