Every morning when I wake up I
drink a cup of coffee. When I pick up the mug my wrist and elbow are in a
flexed position and my shoulder is also in flexion. When I put the mug back on the
counter my wrist and elbow are in extension, while my shoulder is still in
flexion. The motions of flexion and extension of the wrist and elbow occur in
the sagittal plane around the frontal axis. The osteokinematics of the elbow
are in an open-kinematic chain. In terms of arthrokinematics, the moving ulna
is the concave segment and it will roll anteriorly and glide anteriorly on the
stable convex humerus. The prime mover of the elbow during flexion is the
biceps brachii.
