Protecting the brain against concussion

Concussions are very prevalent in our society especially for the adolescent population, yet there is a lack of communication on how to detect and treat them. I chose to watch this ted talk by Kim Gorgens because as a mother and a neuropsychologist she shares an interesting view on the subject. The first thing she discusses is the importance of studying up on concussions and traumatic brain injuries to understand and look for signs and symptoms. Kim has created a website called, cokidswithbraininjury.com that shares information for athletes, coaches, and parents on how a concussion occurs and what to do next. The ted talk also encourages the audience to speak up. Ask questions such as what the budget for protective equipment is, and how old is it.  It is important to not settle with unsafe equipment as the future of our adolescents are at stake. Kim also argues that the only way to prevent a bad outcome is to prevent that first injury from occurring. She urges that “suiting up” and wearing helmets and other protective equipment is most necessary to protect our kids.

I enjoyed this ted talk because I feel that it is important to educate and inform the public on the severity of brain injuries and concussions. If we are able to prevent the first accident from occurring, then we can save a lot of people heartache later down the road. Although sometimes accidents are unavoidable, parents and coaches should know the precautions to take during an incident, evaluate the players state, and do not let them return to the game right away. I recommend this ted talk to anyone who wants to put concussions into a real-world perspective. This talk is a great learning tool for everyone, but especially those parents and children who are at risk for gaining a concussion. Along with the ted talk there is a reading list of other concussion related blogs, lectures, and books that Kim has put together for those that are willing to educate themselves on traumatic brain injuries.
